Deaf Aotearoa is the national Disabled Persons Organisation representing Deaf people in Aotearoa New Zealand. It advocates for the Deaf community and works with government agencies, service providers and other organisations to improve accessibility.
With 14 offices nationwide, including an office in Whangārei, Deaf Aotearoa supports Deaf people at every stage of life. Its services provide people with the knowledge, information, resources and skills they need to manage events in their own lives independently.
Support for children and families
The First Signs service supports families with Deaf and hard of hearing children from birth to five years old.
First Signs helps children and their whānau develop New Zealand Sign Language (NZSL) and learn about Deaf culture within their homes and communities.
Deaf youth services
Deaf Aotearoa’s Youth Service supports Deaf young people and their families as young people develop their Deaf identity.
The service provides age-appropriate information, connection and support to help Deaf young people participate confidently in their families, schools and communities.
Support for Deaf adults and seniors
Deaf Aotearoa supports Deaf people aged 16 and over who are no longer in full-time education.

Deaf Aotearoa also provides a Disability Information Advisory Service for people seeking Deaf-related information and support.
NZSL interpreter bookings
iSign is Deaf Aotearoa’s nationwide New Zealand Sign Language interpreter booking service.
The service helps Deaf people, organisations and service providers book qualified NZSL interpreters for appointments, meetings, events and other situations where accessible communication is required.
NZSL translation services
Deaf Aotearoa translates documents, videos and other resources into New Zealand Sign Language.
These services make important information more accessible to Deaf people whose first or preferred language is NZSL.
Deaf Awareness Workshops
Deaf Awareness Workshops help businesses, community groups and other organisations better understand Deaf culture, communication and NZSL.
The workshops support organisations to become more accessible, welcoming and inclusive for Deaf people.
New Zealand Sign Language Week
Each May, Deaf Aotearoa coordinates New Zealand Sign Language Week.
NZSL Week celebrates one of Aotearoa New Zealand’s official languages, promotes Deaf culture, challenges misconceptions and raises awareness of NZSL throughout the country.
