Throughout June, we are raising awareness and understanding of aphasia and its impact on people and whānau across Aotearoa.
Aphasia is a communication difficulty caused by damage to the language areas of the brain. It can affect a person’s ability to speak, understand, read, or write, and is most commonly caused by stroke. AphasiaNZ estimates that around 29,000 New Zealanders are living with aphasia as a result of stroke.
Aphasia Awareness Month is an opportunity to start conversations, challenge misconceptions, and promote greater understanding of how we can communicate with and support people living with aphasia.
