During a natural disaster or in an emergency it is important that you can be updated on what is happening and get through to the emergency services. Here is information regarding a new FREE Hazard app for all smartphones and how to register for the Text 111 service.
New FREE Hazard app for all smartphones
This is to let you know that the Northland CDEM Group has moved to a new alerting technology for severe weather, tsunami and other civil defence emergencies: the Hazard app for smartphones.
The more people who have this free app on their phones, the more resilient our Northland communities become. So we’re encouraging you to firstly download the Hazard app yourself, and then to share it with your networks (either by forwarding this message, or alternatively via the ‘share this app’ option within the app once you download it).
The Hazard app replaces the text-based OPTN system for alerts, which is no longer being used by the Northland CDEM Group.
Developed internationally by Red Cross, the Hazard app is being used by a growing number of official agencies, including MetService and GNS Science, as well as other New Zealand CDEM groups.
It is downloadable at no cost from Google Play (for Android phones) or the Apple iTunes/App Stores (for iPhones).
Please note that the Hazard app replaces only the OPTN system for Northland CDEM – the other forms of communication which are in place with you are not changing at this time.
