Free ‘Understanding Epilepsy’ Seminars
Published May 23rd 2012, Posted in NorthlandEpilepsy Northland invite you to attend free seminars being held throughout Northland about ‘Understanding Epilepsy’. These seminars are being held in Whangarei, Kerikeri, Kaitaia, Maungaturoto, Kaikohe and Dargaville.
Topics that will be covered include; What is epilepsy, what causes epilepsy, recognition of seizure types, first aid for seizures, seizure triggers, recoding seizures, principles of anti-epileptic medication and life style issues for example.

Down Syndrome Protest at workshop

Parents of Down syndrome children have been shut out of a nationwide series of workshops they say will help facilitate the genocide of future sons and daughters with the condition.
Last night a group of five parents handed out leaflets to midwives and GPs as they arrived at a workshop on antenatal screening for Down syndrome and other conditions in New Plymouth.

Free resources to support young people
Published May 11th 2012, Posted in NorthlandThe Young New Zealanders Foundation is a charitable trust dedicated to helping young Kiwis by developing and distributing highly effective resources free to young people, their parents and caregivers, schools and counsellors.
The aims of the Foundation include: building a high self-esteem, teaching communication and personal coping strategies, and an ability to handle life’s stressors, developing a sense of purpose and a healthy attitude to mind and body, being able to ask for help when it is needed.
They have developed a range of resources and strategies for enhancing individual resilience in young people.

Meningococcal C Vaccination ‘Catch Up’ Programme

Last year there was an outbreak of Meningococcal C disease in Northland.
Most of the people affected were young people and children, and three died. Meningococcal C causes meningitis (Inflammation around the brain) or septicaemia (blood poisoning) which can rapidly cause serious illness or death (within 24 hours). Fever, headache or a still neck, vomiting, and irritability or drowsiness are some of the symptoms. Some people will also develop a rash.

Screening for Down syndrome - A community perspective
Published May 01st 2012, Posted in NationalMidwives and General Practitioners have been invited to a series of nationwide workshops in May and June 2012 to further enhance skills, knowledge and understanding in relation to antenatal screening for Down syndrome & other conditions.
The Down syndrome community has been excluded from participation in the workshops and we are taking this opportunity to provide our positive perspective on the screening programme.

Budget to boost disability services in Australia

PMPrime Minister Julia Gillard announced today that funding will be set aside in the May 8 federal budget to launch the national disability scheme a year ahead of the schedule set out by the Productivity Commission.
‘‘Ms Gillard said at an ‘‘Every Australian Counts’’ rally of almost 2000 people at Sydney Olympic Park, ‘‘Disability doesn’t discriminate and it could happen to anyone… Promise me you won’t stop campaigning and I will promise you we will not stop working on this.’‘
