Multi-sensory environment now available
Published 06 July 2010, Posted in NorthlandMultisensory environments provide people with opportunities for relaxation, exploration, autonomy and control.
Leisure and recreation are recognised as one of the basic human needs. They are primary to development and social enhancement.
The essence of multisensory rooms is to create a feeling of safety, novelty and stimulation which is under the users control, and at their own pace.
The main advantage of the environment is that it can be used with lower functioning, nonambulatory children/adults who generally are especially responsive to kinesthetic and tactile centres. Multisensory areas aim to increase the range of activity options for disabled people and give them opportunity to be more creative and dominant.
The social and physical skills gained within the multisensory areas can then be put into other social and sporting contexts.
There have been three reasons identified why multisensory areas are benefial:
- Every minute we are able to offer severely and profoundly disabled individuals a good time is not time wasted.
- Providing opportunities for quiet relaxed behaviour means less frequent disturbed behaviour for the individual and the carers.
- A secondary effect of the previous experience is that parents and carers are able to have moments of more frequent and improved communication with the children/adults.
