MoH Long Term Conditions Workshop

Published May 15th 2008, Posted in Northland / 2 Comments MoH Long Term Conditions Workshop

The purpose of the hui is to develop the relationship between the community and voluntary sector and the Ministry of Health, in the area of long-term conditions.

The hui will also provide an opportunity to up-date community and voluntary organisations working in this area on current projects in long-term conditions.

The Whangarei workshop is to be held on Thursday 12th June at Forum North, Cafler Suite 1 from 10am until midday.

What is the Long-Term Conditions Programme?

The Long-Term Conditions Programme was established in response to the National Health Committee’s Report, “Meeting the Needs of People with Chronic Conditions – Hapi te whanau mo ake ake tonu” report, which is available on the Ministry of Health website

The programme has been set up to look at how the health system can better support people who have a long-term condition, and the groups and people who work on the ground to support them.

Over the next year or so a major focus for the team is developing a forward looking plan or “Framework” for groups, such as yours, that support people with long-term conditions.

What is the purpose of the workshops?

The meetings have several purposes:

  • To keep the people working on the ground informed about the Ministry’s long-term conditions programme and where we are headed with it;
  • To ensure the expertise, knowledge and experience of those people gets included in the development of the plans for the future of the programme and that the important issues are considered as we plan our way forward;
  • To develop an on-going relationship between the Ministry and community and voluntary groups working in this area to make sure we can work together effectively for the benefit of people living with long-term conditions.

What will be considered at the meetings?

The meetings will start with a brief presentation from the Ministry about the long-term conditions programme and the Framework. After that the meeting will be open to attendees to raise any issues and discuss the development of the Framework. The aim is to be flexible enough so you can raise anything you feel is important, but key matters we would like to cover include:

  • What long-term conditions are and why they present a challenge for the traditional health system in New Zealand;
  • Why we need to improve the way the health system supports people with long-term conditions;
  • How we would like the health system to support people with long-term conditions by 2020 (i.e. a ‘vision’);
  • The main areas where improvement will lead to a better system;
  • How patients, their families, whanau and carers; doctors, nurses and other providers of health care; community groups; and government agencies can work together to achieve the vision.

This is most timely especially in the Northland
area.  This workshop would be well worth attending
by the groups mentioned in the Fact Sheet. Long term conditions are usually not in the forefront of MOH thinking as they are a difficult and long term problem with several courses of action necessary.

I congratulate the MOH for this endeavour and ask that in the Northland area there will be a good turnout of groups involved.  See you there.

Oh please!

I’ve been dutifully attending MOH forums for years now and the MOH is still dithering around debating the use of wheelchairs outside the home, and whether long term conditions come under disability or health?

Spare me the heart attack!!

No, I won’t be going. It’s on a Thursday anyway, and my budget only allows for one trip to town when my IB comes in on a Wednesday.
