New Zealand Sign Language Week – Monday 4th May to Friday 8th May

Deaf Aotearoa Northland are offering FREE New Zealand Sign Language (NZSL) taster classes over NZSL week.  These taster classes run for approx 30 minutes and are available to local businesses or organisations in Whangarei.

These quick taster classes can be during your morning meeting times or morning tea breaks or lunch times.

The classes will give the staff or volunteers in your organisation the opportunity to learn a few signs and will help with confidence when dealing with the Deaf community.

Deaf Aotearoa are are also holding a craft stall in Cameron Mall (site 2) on Thursday 7th May from 9.30am to 3pm.

The symbol for New Zealand Sign Language Week is the butterfly, and the local Deaf community have been busy making butterfly crafts to sell at the stall.

We have a variety of crafts including: cards, bookmarks, gift boxes, pottery, corrugated iron butterflies, butterfly covered notebooks, etc.

To celebrate NZSL week local Deaf artists along with Deaf Aotearoa will be holding an art exhibition at Arts Promotion Trust (old library). 

The opening will be on Monday 4th May from 2pm – 4pm. A NZSL An interpreter will be at the opening. The local artists are Alesha Hudson, Brett Marshall, Dawn Volkner & Josie Spring, they are offering a variety of artworks including: paintings, corrugated iron work, oil pastels, etc.
