Published 19 May 2009, Posted in Northland

CCS Disability Action logoCCS Disability Action along with People First and DPA were provided with Training and Leadership funding from the Ministry of Health to facilitate 10 hui / workshops with the focus of enhancing leadership of and by disabled people.

There has already been a hui in Whangarei for Disabled Maori in March this year, the next workshop being held in Auckland is for all Disabled people and there will be about 20 participants attending.

The workshop will use a combination of large group discussion along with small groups and pairs working together. People First logo

We are using Appreciative Inquiry methods to facilitate the topic - what is working well in terms of leadership for you as a Disabled person and what supports have you had both formal and informal to achieve this.

Therefore this and any AI workshop is loosely broken down into the following components:

  • Introductions - individual and of the concepts in the large group
  • 1 to 1 interviews between participants about examples of leadership we have been part of and what has worked to achieve this
  • Several small group activities to draw out the common themes from the interviews and create a statement about what we want from the future using our past experiences as a basis for this
  • Large group work firming this up and creating next action steps

The workshop is run by Disabled facilitators and information that needs to be reported back the MoH regarding what they can do to support people with disabilities will be done both monthly and at the end of the project.
