Report from Kim Silvey – Whangarei District Council Disability Advisor

Kim will be regularly giving us updates on the progress of issues raised at the Disability Sector Reference Group (DSRG) meetings at the Whangarei District Council. Continue reading to find out about mobility parking spaces and access issues in and around the CBD.

Blue Mobility Parking Spaces
Watch this (disability) space…The blue coloured parking spaces are coming to Whangarei.

We are currently reassigning disability car parks in the John Street car park - these are to be repainted in the colour (blue) that has proven to be successful in differentiating them from the many other yellow road markings around CBD and also in deterring illegal parkers.

Slippery CBD
In response to the concerns from the general public about these issues, they are to be addressed at the upcoming DSRG meeting where both ACC and Whangarei District Council Community Safety Officer will speak to the group and listen and identify particular hazardous spots requiring attention (obviously, the sooner the better).

I will give the feedback from this meeting taking place in early June, when hopefully some decisions will be made as to what’s to be done, when and where…
