Chronically Fabulous

In January this year I was awarded a scholarship to attend an Outward Bound course. I was part of a group that came together from all over New Zealand, some of whom had a chronic illness as I do. While waiting to fly to Nelson, I met Amanda, who also comes from Whangarei and who amazingly was going to be on the same Outward Bound course as me.
I enjoyed parts of the course, others I didn’t, as I struggled to do some of the activities due to my chronic conditions of Lupus and Epilepsy. Since returning from Outward Bound Amanda and I have become good friends.
One day we were talking and decided that we both wanted more friends, friends who understand us and who can relate to us with our limitations due to fatigue and lack of strength to achieve physical things. We came to the realization that there wasn’t a group in our area for people our age who have a chronic condition.
We decided that we would start a support group that would meet our needs and others in a similar situation. A friend of mine came up with the name “Chronically Fabulous”. We felt the name suited the group and so Chronically Fabulous was launched on the 6th of May 2011.
The group is for 20 – 40 year olds - or close to - who have any chronic condition. It is a place where we can come and relax and talk to people who understand, without having to explain how we feel. We also hope to have opportunities to have social outings which will not over extend us.
We meet on the first Friday of the month at McDonalds on Bank Street from 4.30 – 6pm in the party room. There is no charge to come but you are most welcome to buy refreshments from the café at McDonalds.
Everyone is welcome to come and join us – friends, family and whanau.
