Child and Youth Issues Public Forum

Published 28 October 2011, Posted in Northland Child and Youth Issues Public Forum

This forum is being organized by Whangarei Child Poverty Action group, with the support of Manaia Health PHO.

The recent and proposed legislative changes currently being considered in parliament have a profound effect on our children and young people. Please come along to find out what our prospective MPs in the upcoming election will do for our children and young people.

The evening will be hosted by local lawyer and television personality, Rob Harte.
The discussion format will entail two panels: prospective candidates will be on one panel and another panel of local ‘experts’ (young people, teachers, nurses, social workers, Women’s Refuge, child and youth workers).

  • Candidates will be invited to speak for five minutes on two issues:
  • What do you see are the key issues for children and young people in Whangarei?
  • What are your party’s policies and solutions aimed at addressing these issues?

Once the candidates have spoken, the local panel will each respond to what has been said and then the discussion will be thrown open to the floor for questions.

We see this evening as an exciting opportunity for local concerns to be addressed by prospective MPs. Given that our children and young people in Whangarei face particular challenges, we see that an event like this will enable them to see and hear what our local candidates have to offer.

Please note we have only invited the candidates standing in the Whangarei general electorate and the Tai Tokerau Maori electorate.  We are not inviting the Northland general electorate candidates.
