Disabled have say about UNCRPD
Published 01 May 2011, Posted in NorthlandOn April 20th the Human Rights Commission, in conjunction with Tiaho Trust held a Hui to explain and discuss the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, which New Zealand recently signed and ratified.
The Hui was well attended by a mix of disabled people, their whanau/carers and other interested community members.
Workshops were held to discuss the key human rights issues experienced, and what needs to be done in Northland to create an equal and accessible society.
Disabled people are the last bastion of human rights as they fight for the same privileges as mainstream citizens. Some invaluable information was gathered from the outcome of the workshops and this will be collated and used in a report written by the Human Rights Commission to be presented to the United Nations. The report will make recommendations on what can be done to improve the lives of disabled people in New Zealand.
Thank you to those who attended this hui. As soon as we hear anything further from the Human Rights Commission we will update this article.
