Brain Health & Research Lectures - Kerikeri
Published June 15th 2011, Posted in NorthlandThe Neurological Foundation of New Zealand with support from Tiaho Trust is proud to present free public lectures by leading Neuroscientists Dr Cathy Stinear and Professor Winston Byblow on Saturday 16th July from 10.30am to 1.30pm at the Kerikeri Primary School.
Dr Cathy Stinear will be speaking about ‘Your plastic brain, predicting and priming recovery after stroke; Professor Winston Byblow asks “will physical activity or Sudoku keep us sharp in old age? ‘Fit brain, how physical activity can maintain brain power’.

Outward Bound - Aspire Scholarship
Published June 14th 2011, Posted in NorthlandThe aim of the Aspire scholarship is to provide New Zealanders who have MS or arthritis with the opportunity to attend Aspire, an eight day low impact experience for people over 27 years.
Just like any other Outward Bound course you will experience activities like sailing, rock climbing, kayaking and high ropes. This is your opportunity to get outdoors and feel the exhilaration of achieving more than you thought possible.

I take my hat off
Published June 14th 2011, Posted in Northland / 1 CommentHandmade paper in three dimensions: Exhibition by ‘The Papermil’ froml 10th to the 30th June at the Strand Arcade in the former ‘Blue Revolution’ shop.
Whangarei is well known for the number and quality of artists working in the area. The artists at The Papermill may not be so well-known and some people even believe that the Papermill has closed down! Not so!
To put The Papermill’s artists back on the map they are holding this exhibition.

Chronically Fabulous

This is an opportunity for people to come together, relax and be with other people who understand. We meet on the first Friday of each month in the room at McDonalds on Bank Street from 4.30pm - 6pm.

Mobility Taxi services in Whangarei

Many people with disabilities in Whangarei require the services of a taxi company with a Mobility Van to take part in activities in their community.
Tiaho Trust would like to hear from people who use a mobility van to find out if the service is meeting their needs.
i.e. Do you get picked up on time? Do you have to travel with others who have also booked the van, and does this make you late? Can you book a van to take you out after 5pm? How are you treated?

A team is comprised of two people who invite as many people as they wish to a dinner party at their home. As the hosts, you will buy the relevant ingredients and cook a three course meal comprising entrée, main and dessert. Guests bring their own alcohol.
At the end of the evening the guests decide the value each course and pay that amount to the hosts. The total amount paid is then donated to the MS Society of NZ.

Alzheimers Society Northland Gala Dinner
Published May 11th 2011, Posted in NorthlandJoin us for an evening of fine wine, fine dining and fine music on Saturday 28th May at Barge Showgrounds Events Centre at 6pm for a 6.30pm start.
The evening includes a five course degustation menu and complimentary champagne. Masterchef NZ Judge Simon Gault and his Nourish Group have thrown their support behind this event. Shane Yardley, and New Zealand’s finest Maitre’d, Robert Johnston will be hosting this dinner.
Every cent of the money raised will go towards educating and supporting people with dementia, their carers, family and whanau throughout Northland.

Disabled have say about UNCRPD
Published May 01st 2011, Posted in NorthlandOn April 20th the Human Rights Commission, in conjunction with Tiaho Trust held a Hui to explain and discuss the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, which New Zealand recently signed and ratified.
The Hui was well attended by a mix of disabled people, their whanau/carers and other interested community members.
Workshops were held to discuss the key human rights issues experienced, and what needs to be done in Northland to create an equal and accessible society.

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Information and Support
Published April 26th 2011, Posted in NorthlandMEISS Whangarei – Myalgic Encephalopathy Information and Support Service, is for people affected by ME/CFS. CFS is Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and is another name for this disease.
We also include those caring for people with ME/CFS, those with fibromyalgia, another very similar disease, those with Chronic Chemical Sensitivity and all medical people with an interest in the subject. We cover the whole of the North, having members in Kaikohe, Kaitaia and Dargaville.
