Beta Body Gym is better!

A special room at the Beta Body Gym in Kaitaia for young people with disabilities and their carers was opened last Friday evening with much aroha and support from the local community.
“Including people with disabilities is part of the kaupapa for our gym,” said Karen Riwai, owner. “The Beta Body Gym is part of and available for all the community.”

Parent to Parent - change of dates

This is a reminder from Parent to Parent Northland that they are having a Sibling day on the 14th of June. Check out this article for more information.
The Parent Support training that was scheduled for 30th May has been cancelled due to it being the Queens Birthday Weekend and the one day training will now be held on 20th June with a new weekend one planned for 25/26 July.
Parent to Parent Northalnd are sorry if this will causes any Inconvenience to those interested in participating in this course. Please do not hesitate to contact us for more information.

ASB Paihia run/walk

The ASB Paihia Run/Walk is taking place on Sunday 7th June 2009 starting at 10am.
You can be part of the 8km run or 6km walk, you need to get your entry in quick as there are limited spaces available, entries close 3rd June.
There will be awesome spot prizes! You could win a camera from Gen-i or an Avanti bike!
Entry is free and a BBQ lunch on the Village Green will be provided for all Halberg participants following the event

Disabled Leadership Course

CCS Disability Action along with People First and DPA were provided with Training and Leadership funding from the Ministry of Health to facilitate 10 hui / workshops with the focus of enhancing leadership of and by disabled people.
There has already been a hui in Whangarei for Disabled Maori in March this year, the next workshop being held in Auckland is for all Disabled people and there will be about 20 participants attending.

Caroline Eve Charity Fashion Parade

This event, held in Kerikeri on Saturday May 2nd at The Razza, lived up to its promise of being an evening of style and fun - thanks to a great team of helpers and volunteers, who ensured that everything was “all right on the night”!
Diane, Manager of Caroline Eve and her wonderful volunteer models performed very professionally – showing off the fashions to an appreciative crowd of around 100 people. Sally Macauley, Deputy Mayor of the Far North, coordinated her commentary beautifully with the models and created a very warm rapport with the audience.

Lack of parking faulted - Disabled not consulted

An advocate for people with disabilities has criticised the Whangarei District Council about the lack of disabled carparking near the city’s new police station.
The council gave the police station a waiver to reduce the carparks in its underground fleet parking area from more than 100 to about 90. But Whangarei’s Disability Sector Reference Group chairman, Jonny Wilkinson, said there had been a lack of consultation with the group about the need for disabled carparks in the area.
