Northland Athletes do us proud!

The 37th Mitsubishi Motors Paralympics New Zealand Nationals were held over the weekend of 13-15 November 2009 in various locations around Wellington. Sports on offer were – Archery (Auckland), Athletics, Lawn Bowls, Hand Cycling, Power lifting, Sailing, Shooting, Clay Target Shooting, Swimming and Table Tennis.
Northland was represented by Brian Froggatt, Ming Ming Edgar, Brent Lynn and Cameron Leslie, even though Cameron lives in Auckland whilst attending Uni. Cameron and Brian were able to fly down on Friday. Brent, Ming Ming accompanied by Sam his niece as caregiver, were driven down by Theresa Lynn.

Ex-comedian brings poetry to Whangarei

What do you call a comedian who doesn’t want to have to be funny anymore? A poet on a mission.
Gay, disabled comedian, social entrepreneur – and now poet – Philip Patston brings his unique brand of poetry to Whangarei to celebrate the United Nations International Day of Disabled Persons on 3 December.
The two performances by Philip Patston mark the end of a unique exhibition at the Whangarei Arts Museum called Access Art an exhibition comprising of;

The Disability Clothesline

Media Statement - Violence against disabled people is never OK
Tomorrow, White Ribbon Day sees the launch of New Zealand’s first Disability Clothesline, a visible statement of the ‘silent epidemic’ of abuse and violence against disabled people in New Zealand.
Pansy Wong, Associate Minister of Disability Issues, will launch the Disability Clothesline project at 10.30 am at the national office of NNSVS, Wellington. The project is a clothesline strung with t-shirts that showcase messages by and about disabled people who have been hurt, or in some cases murdered.
The Disability Clothesline will be launched on 25 November to complement the White Ribbon Day message that violence against women is not OK.

Help for Gout Sufferers

Gout is becoming more prevalent in Northland, but Arthritis New Zealand will be at the forefront of fighting this disease in the Northland over the next 12 months.
Arthritis New Zealand has recently gained an important contract with the Northland DHB, specifically to run a Gout Education Programme, with particular emphasis on Northland’s Maori population.

Working together improves access for disabled

For years the Bank Street Medical Centre Te Aroha Noa patients who use wheelchairs have had difficulty getting into see their doctors. This is because there has been a reserved car park smack bang in front of their accessible ramp.
The Te Aroah Noa Medical Centre situated next to the Town Hall now has a much needed accessible car space and dedicated access to their ramp and entrance with the help of Tiaho Trust and the Whangarei District Council.

Sailing for the Disabled

A Whangarei Opportunity
Earlier this year I accompanied my twin brother, who has multiple sclerosis, to a yachting event in Surfer’s Paradise, Australia.
As a yachtie from a long way back, what I saw there really impressed me, as previously I had thought that this activity was for able bodied people only.
What has changed is the type of yacht that is now available for people with any form of disability, be it mental or physical, to enjoy recreational or competitive sailing.

‘Sweet As’ and ‘More than looking’

View Visit and Experience this sound ‘popping’ - sweet smelling and multi-sensory installation of luscious confectionary colours and an accompanying collections-based exhibition designed for sight-affected and disabled art enthusiasts.
Come smell the spring roses in the Rose Gardens and view the art museum collection, including the recently returned C. F. Goldie painting, and learn about some ‘new ways of seeing’. An exhibition designed to celebrate those with disabilities in our community and a more inclusive way of ‘seeing’.
Exhibition concept in collaboration with Tiaho Trust and DPA Northland.
The Whangarei Art Museum is a participant in the Whangarei District Council Access Whangarei – a guide to accessible facilities in the district initiative.
