Arthritis support a lifeline

Morningside mother-of-two Evelyn Sutherland does not know where she would be without Arthritis NZ Northern Region.
The foundation has been a lifeline for Evelyn as she copes with severe rheumatoid arthritis along with other illnesses in her family, and she urges people to be generous during Arthritis Appeal Week.
A recent study on muscle and joint conditions found musculoskeletal disorders affect one in four New Zealanders and cost the country more than $5.5 billion a year.

Autism at school

A video resource for teachers and parents in New Zealand
For children on the autism spectrum, school can be a frightening, even sickening, place. A child’s ability to learn can be greatly affected by anxiety and difficulty understanding teachers and other students.
As more children in New Zealand are diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD), the pressure increases on schools and teachers trying to cope.
In this DVD, split into sections for easy access, teachers show how they are creating environments where children with ASD are able to learn and thrive, parents tell us about their experiences with school and students talk about how it is for them.

34 year old in rest home care

Robyn Rainey is aged 34 and lives in a Christchurch rest home.
She is one of nearly 1000 young people around the country who are forced to live with the elderly because there is no appropriate accommodation for them elsewhere.
Rainey, who has Down syndrome and breathing difficulties, has lodged a complaint with the Human Rights Tribunal over the lack of appropriate facilities for young people with ongoing medical needs.

New DVD helps health professionals work with Deaf

A new DVD for health professionals working with Deaf or hearing-impaired patients was recently launched by Health and Disability Commissioner Tania Thomas in Hamilton.
The DVD, Medical Professionals working with Deaf and Hearing Impaired Clients, is a Deaf Aotearoa initiative and was developed by Waikato-based, Deaf producer Brent Macpherson’s company, Stretch Productions.
Deaf Aotearoa CEO Rachel Noble says the DVD idea arose after discussions about ways to ensure accurate two-way communication between health providers and Deaf or hearing impaired clients.

Mita ‘Wins’ Hearts

Whangarei’s Deaf boxer, Mita Moses stepped into the ring for his debut boxing match on 29th August. Mita said that his original opponent pulled out of the competition and was replaced with a boxer who had already turned professional with 105 fights under his belt.
The fight was a close contest, but Mita stopped the fight towards the end because he felt his opponent had an unfair advantage. Smiling at the outcome, Mita announced that his next fight was 5th December in Auckland.

IRD – Small changes make big difference for disabled patients
Tiaho Trust is working alongside Manaia Health PHO general practices to Improve their Responsiveness to Disabled (IRD) patients.
West End Medical Centre agreed to be the pilot medical centre and assisted Tiaho Trust to refine their assessment of the centres both in terms of physical barriers and attitudinal barriers. Gail Stacey IRD Project Coordinator said that their input was invaluable in moving the project forward and subsequently attaining a 75% uptake of the project by Manaia Health PHO general practices.
New books for specific impairments

The Whangarei Community now has access too easy to read and up to date specialist’s health books for individuals and families living with Epilepsy and Multiple Sclerosis thanks to Tiaho Trust.
Tiaho Trust supports fourteen specialist Disability Information Advisory Service providers in Northland and administers a budget in collaboration with them with the aim of increasing the effective delivery of disability information to the wider community.
The Trust has recently purchased a number of books on these organisations behalf as there was a need within the community for more information about living with these conditions. The books have been donated to the Whangarei District Library.

MS Golf Tournament

Northland MS are having a fundraising golf tournament for all levels of talent (or not) men and ladies on Sunday 8th November at the Whangarei (Denby) Golf Club, Tikipunga.
Get a team of four together to play a nine hole ambrose, non-golfers are invited to come and have some fun as well.

‘Have a Go Day’

ParaFed Northland is holding a ‘Have a Go Day’ on Saturday 17 October 2009 at Genesis Energy Kensington Stadium, Western Hills Drive, Whangarei
This will be an excellent opportunity for people with disabilities to come along and have a go at different sports as well as finding out what else is on offer at Paralympic level.
There will be displays showing different sports available, and others that could be included if interest is strong enough. We are hoping to attract enough people along on the day to participate in wheelchair rugby and wheelchair basketball, and if enough people are interested, we are willing to offer coaching in these sports.
