Having SLE (Systemic Lupus Erythematosus) changes the course that you may have mapped out for yourself, your career, your job, your social activities - even your family life but it doesn’t mean it all stops here.
Education is the key to learning how to manage with this chronic illness. Seminars, the internet, books all help to understand the changes that have to be made in your daily life, but also having people around you who are experiencing similar symptoms and can be of support are very important – and that is available thru the Whangarei Arthritis Foundation.

ASB Community Trust Meetings

The Auckland meeting is at Orakei Marae, on Kitemoana St, Orakei, on Monday 3 August.
The Northland meeting is in Kerikeri’s The Centre on Saturday, September 5.

One in four adults have musculoskeletal disorders

A recently released study, called “The Crippling Burden”, has given disturbing statistics on the impact of musculoskeletal disorders. The cost to New Zealand is now more than $5,570 million a year.
This is the first update since ‘The Economic Cost of Arthritis’ report was released in 2006, and the costs are only escalating.
There are over 850,000 New Zealanders who need to have their disorders given higher recognition by healthcare leaders. As it currently stands, arthritis isn’t one of the 13 health priorities.

Oral history to be recorded in NZSL

Oral history in New Zealand will break new ground following this year’s allocation of awards for recording memories and life stories. For the first time a video oral history project will be recorded in New Zealand Sign Language, the country’s third official language, with money given to members of the Deaf community.
Northland Parents of Deaf Children has received $12,000 from the Australian Sesquicentennial Gift Trust Awards in Oral History to interview parents and their Deaf adult children. It is planned that interviews will be a pilot for a larger project.

Art Exhibition

As usual the piece can be of any medium you choose, either a painting, mosaic or sculpture..
This invitation is open to anyone with a disability living in the Northland region. Come on Kaitaia, Dargaville, Kawakawa, Kaikohe people. We would love to see some work from your regions.
The art exhibition is part of NorthAble’s Client Services teams preparations for the end of year celebrations in recognition of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities on 3rd December 2009.

Advocacy Workshop
