Carer support funding increases

From 1 November 2007, the amount paid for Carer Support Subsidy will increase for Ministry of Health funded recipients. This change has been made to make the payment for Carer Support Subsidies around the country consistent. In some areas of the country this will mean a minimal change. In others, it will be a more substantial increase.

ACC Help for disabled

If you’re disabled and get injured, you can apply for help from ACC – whether or not you’re getting Ministry of Health (MoH) funded support.  Many disabled people aren’t aware they’re covered by ACC. But like everyone else in New Zealand, those with a pre-existing disability are entitled to seek ACC’s help following an injury – no matter where or how the injury happens.

The Deaf community are outraged with the use of inappropriate language describing Deaf people in the recent media coverage of missing person Emma Agnew.

The Deaf Association of New Zealand has sent out a media release stating that “The Deaf community ask that the term deaf-mute be left to history as it relates to a time long gone when Deaf people were not regarded as fully competent members of our community – of course a perception that is quite wrong”.

Andrew Bell is doing just that.....As part of his rehabilitation, his physio suggested he set himself a 6 month goal.  Andrew found that the Chilltech Beach 2 Basin on 2nd March 2008 fitted the bill.

Medical certificate changes

Recently the Brain Injury Association Northland had a visit from Amy Walters – the new Health and disability Co-ordinator at Work & Income. Amy explained some changes that would effect people who receive a Sickness or Invalids Benefit.

Opportunity to participate

IMAGINE BETTER - An opportunity to build positive futures for young people with physical disabilities and their families

Standards Plus are conducting two focus groups in Whangarei on behalf of a philanthropic organisation that is looking at how they distribute funds to children and young people with a physical disability.

They are looking for 8 people for each meeting, the first meeting is for parents and the second is for young people with a disability aged 12 year – 21 years.

“Wow what a show!”

Pauline Allen-Downs, double pass ticket winner to the 10th Anniversary show of Touch Compass Dance Company at Forum North, Whangarei last night said after the event “Wow what a show”. Some of the words that come to mind to describe the show are; thought provoking, entertaining, out of the ordinary.

The whole cast worked synergistically together with energy to match throughout the whole show. The children in the audience appeared as enthralled as the adults throughout the whole event.

It was difficult to pick a highlight as the whole performance was fantastic. Overall a humbling experience, thank you for the opportunity.
