What are the three biggest issues affecting disabled people in your community?
- Accessible affordable District wide Public Transport, special needs transport, access to all services Education, Training, Health, Retail, our young special needs students and their parents should be able to choose a School with the facilities and support to cater for these students in the Far North e.g. Okaihau College and receive support for transportation.
- Cluttered Main Street Footpaths – Alfresco Cafes, advertising sandwich boards, pedestrian crossings - safe ingress, passage and egress.
- Some community facilities still do not cater well for community members with disabilities.
- Implement councils recently adopted Social Development Plan, utilize councils Advocacy role, form partnerships with the appropriate Agencies to jointly advocate on behalf of the community for an all-encompassing Public Transport system.
- Make sure that the monitoring of Alfresco Cafes/Dinning areas includes ensuring there is sufficient room for wheel chair traffic and safe passage for the blind, investigate other ways for businesses to advertise outside their shops and remove the need for sandwich boards. Council must work closely with and seek advice from Organizations such as yourselves to understand the needs of disabled people in a Main street/pedestrian crossing/roading situations – I understand that this is the case for the Kerikeri Main street upgrade.
- Ensure older community facilities, as they are upgraded, receive enough funding to adequately cater for people with a range of disabilities. Again council should have input from an organization such as yours..

Your point that advice should be sought from the disabled people themselves is very important. I am very glad to see you made that point few people have. well done.
