Pick Me!

Craig Brown (NRC)

Standing for:Northland Regional Council
Position: Whangarei
1. Firstly I cannot presume to tell disabled people what their main concerns are. My role is to create the forum and the "climate" where I can be told what the concerns are and then act on them. However I do work with a range of disabled people and have been associated with several Trusts dealing with a range of disabilities. There are several issues:
  • Lack of money to address needs.
  • Suitable transport (accessible and affordable)
  • Access to community facilities, parking, street design, public buildings and other facilities.
  • Being treated differently. We are all "different"
I have served on Local Government for 15years. W.D.C Regional Council Health Board and Polytechnic Councils, so I am aware of what is already in place to address some disability needs. They are:
  • Total Mobility scheme with subsidised transport. Budgets could be extended.
  • Public transport Bus Service. Room to improve bus accessibility and routes and frequency. These are both W.D.C. and Regional Council funded and administered. Regional Council is exploring with other District Councils the provision of bus services in other main centres.
  • Increase Broadband capability for quicker and easier access across Northland. Increases opportunity for all sectors. This would be a Regional Council responsibility.
  • Improve "distant learning" through Polytechnic.
  • Being treated differently. We are all "different"
  • Regional Council should be at forefront of creating better Intersectoral cohesion so that no sector is neglected.
  • Local Government, Central Government departments and community group Health leaders, Social Service providers - all talking in the same forum. That way nobody should fall through the cracks.
