Charity seeking deserving children for free bike
Published July 27th 2010, Posted in NorthlandVariety – The Children’s Charity is currently calling for nominations of deserving children to be recipients of bikes on its 2010 Bikes for Kids tour, in which it will distribute 450 bikes in the North and South Islands.
“This year we are visiting Waitakere as part of our tour and encourage teachers, parents, caregivers, friends and grandparents to nominate a child aged between seven and nine to receive a brand new bike and helmet from Variety,” said Lorraine Taylor, CEO of Variety – The Children’s Charity, which has distributed over $11.7 million to sick, disabled and disadvantaged children since its inception in 1989.

Battle of the Bridges Tournament

The inaugural tournament of the Battle of the Bridges took place last weekend at the Alan Brewster Centre in Papatoetoe.
This tournament replaced the “Focus Cup” Tournament as Focus 2000, Iris and Creative Abilities all contributed evenly to the event.
It was the largest tournament I had been to in recent years with 54 players and it was great to see so many new players having fun and participating in Boccia. This was a Pairs Tournament and all grades of Boccia were mixed. Each pair was also given a handicapped score to help even out the playing field.

Deep brain stimulation and Parkinson’s

A year ago Dr Snow asked how I would feel about being put forward for Deep Brain Stimulation ?!!
Following assessments in Auckland I was more than happy to agree with having this operation . I had a constant tremor , dyskinesia , had lost a lot of weight; down to 63 kg and was losing my balance frequently , causing many falls and naturally some injuries which was a concern for my family . One of these falls ( off a ladder ) resulted in having a left hip replacement in February this year and the Deep Brain Stimulation in April !

Northland Brain Train available on DVD

In March this year, Northlanders had the chance to discover the wonders of the human brain and learn about the latest neuroscience research as the Northland Brain Train made its way across the region.
The event included lectures by leading neuroscientists on the latest brain research, seminars on brain health and medical care from community support groups, and information displays with advice on support and services.
This was a collaborative initiative by The Neurological Foundation, Tiaho Trust and The Northland Disability Information Advisory Services Collective.

Norman finds support at Parkinson’s Northland

A story from Norman Wallace, a member of Parkinson’s Northland.
Back in 1986, during a trip back to the Old Country, I fell up a flight of steps in Shaftesbury Avenue for no apparent reason. I felt a real fool!
After that, at about six to nine months intervals I had various unexplained falls, not serious but nevertheless worrying.
By the time I was 80 years in 2006, I had become “wobbly” and found I couldn’t write legibly anymore. I took this to be old age creeping up on me. However, a trip to the doctor for a routine diabetic check, told me that I now had Parkinson’s Disease as well, and that the falls were almost certainly an early indication of the condition.
