Term ‘Deaf-Mute’ belongs in past
Published November 20th 2007, Posted in National / 1 CommentThe Deaf community are outraged with the use of inappropriate language describing Deaf people in the recent media coverage of missing person Emma Agnew.
The Deaf Association of New Zealand has sent out a media release stating that “The Deaf community ask that the term deaf-mute be left to history as it relates to a time long gone when Deaf people were not regarded as fully competent members of our community – of course a perception that is quite wrong”.

Fun run helps Brain Injury Northland

Andrew Bell is doing just that.....As part of his rehabilitation, his physio suggested he set himself a 6 month goal. Andrew found that the Chilltech Beach 2 Basin on 2nd March 2008 fitted the bill.

Opportunity to participate

Standards Plus are conducting two focus groups in Whangarei on behalf of a philanthropic organisation that is looking at how they distribute funds to children and young people with a physical disability.
They are looking for 8 people for each meeting, the first meeting is for parents and the second is for young people with a disability aged 12 year – 21 years.

“Wow what a show!”
Published November 01st 2007, Posted in NorthlandPauline Allen-Downs, double pass ticket winner to the 10th Anniversary show of Touch Compass Dance Company at Forum North, Whangarei last night said after the event “Wow what a show”. Some of the words that come to mind to describe the show are; thought provoking, entertaining, out of the ordinary.
The whole cast worked synergistically together with energy to match throughout the whole show. The children in the audience appeared as enthralled as the adults throughout the whole event.
It was difficult to pick a highlight as the whole performance was fantastic. Overall a humbling experience, thank you for the opportunity.
